Cool Tool: Dropbox

Dropbox is a web based file storage and sharing system. A simple download installs a Dropbox directory on your computer and sets up your personal space on the Dropbox servers.  Free accounts give 2GB of storage space, for any type of file you wish to share. Files saved to the Dropbox folder are private to you, unless you choose to share. See the CommonCraft video at the bottom of this post for a simple overview.

Some other highlights:
  • Files placed in the Dropbox folder on your computer and on the server sync automatically, ensuring that you always have access to the most up to date version.
  • Save files that you will want to access from multiple computers. Through the web interface, you can view and download saved files from any internet connected computer.
  • Create a sub directory and share it with colleagues or friends. That folder becomes part of their dropbox, they can view, edit and contribute to the contents, making sharing and collaboration easy.
  • Share a document publicly by placing it in the Public folder. Anyone with the url can access and view the file.

Before setting up an account, be sure to talk with a friend or colleague. Dropbox rewards referrals: For every friend who joins and installs Dropbox, each of you will receive 250 MB of bonus space (up to a limit of 8 GB). There are several DropBox account holders in district, contact Mrs. Bond for a connection.
