Quick Spelling and Vocabulary Boosters

Have you heard of FreeRice.com? It is a great tool for practicing and developing vocabulary, and for helping an organization supply rice to the world's hungry. Players are given a word and 4 possible synonyms, they choose the best match. Incorrect response receive the correct answer immediately on the next screen.  At the right of the screen is a visual of how many grains of rice will be donated based on this session's activities. Difficulty increases as players continuously choose correct responses (you can also choose a level).  The rice donations are supported by advertising that appears on the site; school filters block most of those ads. Students may also practice their Spanish by playing the Spanish language version.

I love when an activity presents multiple learning opportunities. Must Pop Words is a free, web based game that can help students practice typing, spelling and build vocabulary. Players type words formed from letters that bounce onto the screen. Every few minutes a challenge pops up to keep the game from become monotonous, "5 letter word" or a word that begins with "Q". The game ends when 50 balls are on the screen.

Note: Also available via ABCya (they recommend for grades 3, 4 and 5).
