Tech Snack: Discovery Education

This week's After School Tech Snack topic is Discovery Education, a subscription service that provides teacher friendly access to media, lessons, activities, teacher tools, and professional development.

The media includes full length videos and clips, images, clipart, audio, sound segments, digital stories, interactive games, primary source material, and documents. To sort through the content teachers may search by standards (Common Core or NJCCCS), topic, grade level, media type, or any combination of filters. Within the database are also lesson plans and classroom activities based on Discovery Education tools and resources. Most are developed by DEN Stars, teachers who use the media and tools in their classrooms on a regular basis.

In addition to media, teachers may use Builder Tools to create assignments, quizzes, writing prompts, or the new Boards (teacher created links to media on a specific topic). To get the most of out these tools, students accounts must be created. These accounts would allow students to access activities and media shared by you.

The professional development section offers live webinars are many topics, from introductory tours of specific databases or tools to incorporating video production in the STEM classroom. All webinars are offered at no cost to Discovery Education account holders at subscribing schools.

The Discovery Education Community is a free resource for teachers, students, administrators, and parents. Of particular interest to teachers will be lesson plans, puzzle makers, and featured programs (often includes contests and virtual field trips).

GTSD staff are invited to contact Mrs. Bond with any questions about Discovery Education.
