Google Apps: Add-ons

Add-ons are a new feature of Google Drive that add greater functionality and power to Google Docs and Sheets. To access these tools, open a document or spreadsheet in Google Drive. Locate and select Add-ons on the menu bar. Click Get Add-ons to search or browse. Note that some Add-ons are connected to services that require an account or subscription (fee).

Suggested Add-ons for students and staff:
  • Table of contents: Automatically creates table of contents in the sidebar that can be clicked through, for easy document navigation. Clicking on a table of contents heading in the sidebar will move your cursor to that section of the document. After selecting a format in the list, clicking on the refresh button will number automatically your document's headings.
  • Texthelp Study Skills: Use Texthelp’s Highlighting Tools to select and highlight key areas of your document to collect, group, and learn from later. Simply highlight the selected text, and the tool will extract it and place it in a new document (by color or location) for students or their educators to review.
  • EasyBib Bibliography Creator: The Bibliography Creator by EasyBib allows you to easily create a bibliography for your research paper.  Automatically cite books, journal articles, and websites just by entering in the titles or URLs. Format citations in MLA, APA, and Chicago style.  When you're finished creating your bibliography, click Generate Bibliography and we'll alphabetize your citations and add them to the end of your paper.

I highly recommend these Add-ons for teachers and staff:
  • Doctopus: This is my absolute favorite of the Add-ons! Doctopus gives teachers the ability to mass-copy (from a template), share, and manage grading and feedback for student projects in Google Drive.  Its tentacles copy and "hand out" Drive files to a roster of students, giving teachers full control over starter template, sharing configuration, folder organization and file naming, as well as visibility over all work in progress -- including the ability to bulk revoke and revert student editing rights around submission deadlines.
  • Flubaroo: An add-on to Google Forms/Sheets which lets you quickly grade and analyze student performance on multiple choice and fill-in assignments. In a short time you will be able to score each student's responses, view statistics on each question, and email students their scores with optional comments.
