Web Gem: Cookie

Cookie is a free web site devoted to providing age appropriate games and videos for early elementary students. There is no visible advertising and login is not required to play or view. While most content appears to have a math and science focus, the have recently introduced digital stories for new readers.
At cookie, child experts and educators design interactive online games for kids. Our learning games for kids help in building skills needed for success in school. While playing our fun educational games, kids learn to read with phonics, build skills in math, language, social studies, science and much more. Our educational videos encourage children to keep learning, even after school hours.
The large resolution and bright colors would make this fun for a whole class activity on the Promethean or SmartBoard. Make sure your speakers are turned on -- the voiceover explains the rules of the game,  reads the questions, and tells whether the answer is correct or incorrect.

Find content by type (puzzles, math games, ELA games, science games, and just for fun games) or by grade level (PreK, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade). In addition to the web based material, there are also printable worksheets with related content.

Link to the main page for student choice, or link directly to games or media that will help students practice important skills. Most of the content can be embedded on your site or wiki, allowing your students access without leaving your site. Change games as you change your classroom focus.

Some of my favorites:
  • Alphabet Matching helps students practice identifying upper and lower case letters.
  • Add Numbers is great for practicing simple addition, try Minus for subtraction.
  • Jumping Monkey will help the little ones better control the mouse and improve hand-eye coordination.
  • Math Story asks students to count pictures to add the appropriate number to make a fun story.
  • The Frogs is a story about a group of frogs who learn a lesson to think twice before acting. Click the music icon to hear the story read aloud.
